What is Elon鈥檚 testing policy?

While admission to the university does not require an SAT or ACT, Nursing, Accelerated Pathways to PA and DPT and the Accelerated 3+1 Business Dual-Degree programs are highly selective and require standardized test scores for admission and scholarship consideration. Nursing applicants must have a minimum SAT score of 1100 and ACT 22.

Home-schooled applicants and students attending U.S. high schools that do not issue letter grades are required to submit standardized test scores for admission and scholarship consideration.

Why is Elon piloting a test-optional policy?

A test-optional policy is consistent with Elon鈥檚 holistic admission policy. We have done the research and recognize that student success in high school is the best and most important predictor of success in the first-year at Elon. Your years of achievement in school tell us more about you than any standardized test. We will evaluate you application carefully so we get to know who you are and what you can bring to the Elon community. Your essay, high school profile, transcript and Secondary School Report will help us understand why engaged, mentored, experiential learning will propel you to continue achieving in college and beyond.聽 It is up to you to decide whether to submit a test score or if everything else represents you best.

We also know many students have not been able to sit for a test or take a second test as a result of the pandemic. We recognize that applying to college is an exciting but stressful time for students and acknowledge that it is even more so now. That is why we are committed to the project.

Can students self-report test scores?

Yes, Elon will accept self-reported scores. Applicants may self-report SAT/ACT scores on the application for admission. If an applicant is offered admission and enrolls, an official copy of the SAT/ACT score will be required.

What factors are considered for admission to Elon?

The most important factors in the admissions decision are the academic record (including courses taken, grades attained and class standing) followed by the application essay. Other factors considered include leadership potential, extracurricular and service-related activities, special talents, and ability to contribute positively to the campus community. Is standardized testing required for certain applicants?

Yes. Home-schooled and students who attend U.S. high schools that do not issue letter grades are required to submit SAT or ACT scores for admission.

International applicants: If you attend a school where English is not the primary language of instruction, you must demonstrate English proficiency by submitting the聽TOEFL,聽IELTS, or聽Duolingo English Test聽scores.

Will I be considered for merit scholarships if I do not submit a test score?

Yes. All students will be considered for Elon’s聽merit-based scholarships, regardless of whether they submit a test score.

Why will students need to submit standardized test scores after they officially enroll at Elon?

Test scores will be required for enrolling students who have taken an SAT or ACT to be used in the assessment of the test-optional program. Test scores in combination with academic record, are used to determine placement in first-year courses.

If you have never taken the SAT or ACT and do not have scores available, you will not be required to submit a score upon enrollment.
